The Fall River community gathered Monday evening for a memorial service remembering those who died and honoring those who survived the Gabriel House assisted living fire one year ago.
Seating was arranged in front of the facility on Oliver Street for survivors and families of the ten residents who died. Dozens of first responders, many of whom may have been on the scene on July 13, 2025, were also in attendance.
The names of those who perished were read aloud, followed by the ringing of the firefighter’s bell that recognizes fallen heroes. They are:
-
- Rui Albernaz, 64;
- Ronald Codega, 61;
- Brenda Cropper, 66;
- Margaret Duddy, 69;
- Halina Lawler, 70;
- Robert King, 78;
- Kim Mackin, 71;
- Richard Rochon, 78;
- Joseph Wilansky, 77;
- and Eleanor Willett, 86.
A piper followed, playing a rendition of “Amazing Grace” with the release of ten doves in their honor.
Survivor Michael Pimental volunteered to share his journey over the past year.
First responders then added their recollections of the fire, which was the deadliest fire in Massachusetts in 40 years and in Fall River in over 150 years. Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon said public safety officials did a remarkable job in saving lives, thanks to their preparedness.
In the face of the tragedy, the chief said lessons learned from the fire will likely make a nationwide impact.
