Azorean and City Leaders Celebrate Gates’ 20th Anniversary in Fall River

Dignitaries from Portugal and the Azores joined city officials and residents to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Gates of the City on Ponta Delgada Boulevard.

The monument symbolizes the historic cultural connection between Ponta Delgada, Azores, and the City of Fall River. The Fall River Gates are a replica of the Portas da Cidade in Ponta Delgada.

Members of the Portas da Cidade Advisory Committee and the Prince Henry Society were also on hand as the cultural leaders who made the Gates a reality.

Azores Regional Government President José Manuel Bolieiro said both the Portas in Ponta Delgada and the Gates in Fall River serve as an endearing symbol of the dedicated relationship between Portugal, the Azores, and the United States.

The work of establishing a sister city agreement between Fall River and Ponta Delgada began with former Mayor Carlton Viveiros, and the Gates were constructed under the leadership of Former Mayor Edward Lambert, who said it is important that the relationship between the two cities survives the test of time.
