The Fall River School Committee last night voted unanimously to approve a redistricting plan for city elementary and middle schools, which could result in some students changing schools effective this fall.
The district has been working on the plan for two years. Deputy superintendent Elizabeth Legault told the committee the plan will connect more students with schools closer to where they live…While allowing flexibility for parents to make choices in the best interest of their children.
Only a hundred or so students may be affected by the new plan. Parents impacted have until June 1st to file a transfer request to keep their children in their current school.
The committee also heard for the first time from the new interim superintendent, Dr. Kathleen Smith. Dr. Smith replaces Dr. Tracy Curley, who resigned from her post in March.
Dr. Smith comes to the position having served as superintendent in the urban districts of Brockton and Newton.
Mayor Paul Coogan says he looks forward to working with Dr. Smith.
