United Way, Local Letter Carriers Look to Stamp Out Hunger at Annual Food Drive

If you’ve got some extra non-perishable food items in your pantry, the U.S. Postal Service is looking to take them off your hands.

Letter carriers in Fall River, Somerset, and Westport will join thousands of others across the country on Saturday, collecting non-perishable food items as part of their yearly Stamp Out Hunger campaign to stock local food pantries.

The local effort is supported by the United Way of Greater Fall River, which partners with local sponsors to produce 55,000 biodegradable plastic bags sent to residents to use to contribute to the food drive.

The United Way funds food pantries across its service area, meeting an ever-growing community need.

Paul Knarr serves as the organizer of the letter carriers’ food drive efforts in Fall River. He says even though his colleagues put in long hours collecting food, they relish the opportunity to contribute to make an impact in their community.

Since the United Way has been involved in producing the bags, participation in the food drive has been successful.

The Veterans Association of Bristol County has been one of the beneficiaries of the food drive.
