City Begins New Fiscal Year Without an Approved Budget

It is July, and the City of Fall River still does not have a FY 2027 budget. The city council on Tuesday voted to reject Mayor Paul Coogan’s third version of the budget.

Mayor Coogan says the city has moved ahead with a continuing appropriation which will keep city government functioning until the council approves a spending plan…

At a meeting last week between the mayor and city council leadership, the parties began work on an agreement that would have allowed the council to use $40,000 in funds for their own legal counsel. During Tuesday’s meeting, councilors were concerned that such an agreement had support from the mayor and members of the council, but not from city corporation counsel Alan Rumsey. Councilor Shawn Cadime and Mayor Coogan had this exchange on the matter.

The mayor says the agreement is still a work in progress.

Earlier this week, we spoke with city council president Cliff Ponte, who, with vice president Michelle Dionne, met with the administration on the budget late last week. He says councilors still have concerns about school transportation, public safety, and other expenditures that still need clarification.

The council holds its next meeting on July 14.
