The future of the Pearl Street Parking garage was a topic at this week’s meeting of the Fall River City Council.
The garage needs over $5 million in repairs. The administration has received a bid of just over $1 million to sell the garage to First Bristol Corporation, which currently leases most of the garage’s spaces.
Attorney Matthew Thomas, representing the city on this matter, recommends the city council approve the sale, arguing that the garage continues to degrade and any revenue generated by it will decrease.
The city is also proposing creating additional downtown parking space adjacent to the city’s Third Street Garage near Government Center.
Some councilors would like the city to take more time to explore options to retain the garage. Councilor Shawn Cadime says parking downtown is a challenge, and selling the garage could make it worse.
The item was referred to the council’s Committee on Real Estate, Facilities, and Housing for further discussion.
